UEFA Champions League 2025/26: Arsenal & Real Madrid Win Opening Matches
September 16, 2025 — The 2025/26 UEFA Champions League has officially begun, with Arsenal defeating Atletico Club 2-0 and Real Madrid securing a 2-1 victory over Olympique Marseille.
Arsenal vs Atletico Club
The opening match at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain, saw England’s Arsenal take on Atletico Bilbao. Arsenal struggled in the first half, but substitutions changed the course of the game in the second half.
- Gabriel Martinelli scored the first goal in the 72nd minute after coming on for Eberechi Eze.
- Leandro Trossard added the second in the 87th minute, replacing Viktor Gyökeres in the 65th minute.
Real Madrid vs Olympique Marseille
15-time champions Real Madrid hosted Olympique Marseille in another opening-round match, winning 2-1. Goals came from Kylian Mbappé for Madrid and Timothy Weah for Marseille.
Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal received a red card after an incident involving goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.

- Tottenham Hotspur defeated Villarreal 1-0, with Luiz Junior scoring the only goal.
- Juventus drew 4-4 with Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund goals: Karim Adeyemi, Felix Nmecha, Yan Couto, Ramy Bensebaini. Juventus goals: Kenan Yıldız, Lloyd Kelly, Dušan Vlahović (2).
- PSV Eindhoven lost 3-1 to Royal Union SG.
