Rwanda Starts Car Emissions Test to Protect Health and the Environment
The Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) has started a new car emissions inspection. This test checks the smoke and gases that come out of cars. It is done together with the normal car technical inspection (Contrôle Technique).
Why this test matters
- Protecting health: Car smoke can cause breathing problems, heart disease, and other sicknesses.
- Taking care of cars: The test helps drivers fix and maintain cars so they do not pollute.
- Helping nature: It encourages clean cars, including electric and fuel-saving cars.
Important things to know
- You need a technical inspection certificate. If it has expired, you can apply.
- You must book an appointment for the technical inspection.
- All road safety fines must be paid before booking.
How often you need the test
- Private cars: once a year
- Commercial cars: twice a year
Tip: Book the technical inspection and the emissions test together. It saves time and visits.
Which cars must take the test?
- All cars in Rwanda must take the emissions test, except:
- 100% electric cars
- Foreign cars that stay in Rwanda for less than 3 months
Where to take the test
- Remera
